In Davidson Town Council’s Strategic Plan, one of the values identified was transparency in municipal decision making, finances, and communication. Council’s Corner will focus on these strategic priorities as it relates to the Strategic Action Plan:
Engagement, Communications and Team Work
The Town has renewed the Kinsmen Land Project Agreement for an additional five years. This successful partnership has raised a combined total of $581,350 since 2011, with the Town’s share of the proceeds used to support local recreation initiatives.
Council reviewed its annual committee appointments. Council members serve on a variety of Town committees, as well as committees of Council. A complete list of appointments is available on the Town’s website under Town Council.
In developing the Strategic Plan, Council asked our consultant to focus on three key priorities, providing an implementation plan for: expanding essential services, supporting housing development, and improving communication and transparency.
Infrastructure
With three major snowfall events within a week, Public Works staff were kept busy with snow removal, despite challenges from tractor and snowblower breakdowns. The new snow gate attachment on the grader has been a welcome addition; however, with heavy snowfall, some snow ridges are unavoidable. Thank you to the contractors who stepped in to support the Town and help clear streets in record time. Snow cleanup efforts will continue.
The Town has submitted a significant grant application through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund program. If approved, the project would include relining sewer mains, upgrading the sewer force main from the lift station to the lagoon, upsizing two sections of sewer mains, and increasing the lift station’s pump capacity. The total project cost is $9,724,741, with potential funding of up to $7,131,152 from the program, leaving the Town responsible for the remaining $2.6 million.
The Town has renewed the Service Agreement with Loraas for curbside garbage and recycling collection, which includes a 6% increase. Council will review the Town’s corresponding rates at their January meeting.
Recreation and Cultural Programs
Thank you to our staff for organizing the Secret Santa program, and to everyone who donated toys or made a cash contribution. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to provide gifts to more than 60 local children this year.
After a snowstorm postponed our Christmas Parade, we were thrilled to enjoy the beautifully decorated floats and Santa on December 22nd. Thank you to everyone who participated and to those who lined the streets, waving and sharing holiday cheer!
The AGT Centre is busy with hockey, curling and public skating. Public skating passes are available at the Town Office: $111 for a family pass; $55.50 for a single pass; or $2 for drop-in. There is also a drop box just outside the office at the rink. To view the weekly rink schedule, visit the Town website (townofdavidson.com)
If you have questions or would like more information on any of these projects, please contact the Town Office.
